Third World Ports
Because it has operations all over the world, Dubai Ports World has a presence in a number of Third world ports. The company is one of the world leaders in marine port logistics and has 50 terminals in operation in 31 different countries with a further 11 in the development stage. Of the projects in development a number are Third world ports.
In Djibouti where Dubai Ports World currently runs the Port of Djibouti it is developing the Doraleh Container Terminal which will bring additional jobs to the area. In Senegal, two Third world ports are being developed by Dubai Ports. The first is the Port du Futur and the second is the Terminal a Conteneur situated at the Port of Dakar.
In India, Dubai Ports World already runs a number of operations. Currently under development is the Container terminal at Vallarpadam, Kochi. The Port of Kulpi is also under construction. In Pakistan, Dubai Ports is overseeing the expansion of the Qasim International Container Terminal at the Port of Qasim.
However, it is not only the Third world ports which are being developed by Dubai Ports World. In the UK, the firm has been given permission to begin construction of the London Gateway Port. The scheme will cost around £1.5 billion and construction got underway in February 2010.
Other developments in Europe include the Maasvlakte 2 in Rotterdam and Fos in Marseilles. Dubai Ports World has said that it is looking to double its operations over the next decade and will be concentrating heavily on China, India and the Middle East.
