Other Major Ports Around the World
Dubai Ports World has its headquarters in Dubai, and Jebel Ali Port is the firm’s flagship terminal. However the company runs operations from numerous Other Major Ports around the world. When Dubai Ports World acquired P&O, for the sum of £3.9 billion, it inherited a number of ports on US soil.
Many politicians were extremely unhappy that they had not been consulted over whether to allow an Arab run company such access to the US. Threatening to pass legislation to block the move, congress was told by George W Bush, President at that time, that not allowing Dubai Ports World would send a bad message to one of the country’s allies.
However, Dubai Ports World decided to sell its holdings to an American investment firm and the situation was diffused. Dubai Ports World could then concentrate on developing Other Major Ports around the World.
Dubai Ports World currently has 50 operations spread all over the globe and is currently developing 11 more Other Major Ports around the world. In January 2010, the company was given permission to start construction of its London Gateway port, a project which will cost an estimated £1.5 billion. Work was underway by February.
Other Major Ports around the world being developed by Dubai Ports World include the Port du Futur and Terminal a Conteneur in Senegal; the Port of Callao in Peru; the Vallarpadam container terminal in India and the Yarmica development in Turkey.
