Dubai Ports World
Currently operating in 31 countries around the world, Dubai Ports World is a major player in marine terminal operations. At the moment it has 50 terminals in operation which, between them, handled more than 43.4 million twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEU) last year. It is working to develop a further 11 terminals and within the next decade, Dubai Ports World, aims to double its capacity.
Dubai Ports World has its headquarters in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. The company employs more than 30,000 staff in countries including the UK, Australia, China, India, Russia and Argentina.
Although it acquired a number of operations in the US when it took over P&O in 2006, Dubai Ports World does not currently operate on US soil. Because of fears over port security, the House of Representatives voted to have the deal blocked. Dubai Ports World had already agreed to suspend operations in the US and later agreed to offload its North American assets to Global Investment Group an arm of American International Group.
Dubai Ports World’s Jebel Ali facility in Dubai, the company’s flagship facility, has won the prize for Best Seaport in the Middle East for the past 16 years and is the bench mark for the level of service Dubai Ports World aims to offer is customers wherever they are on the world map.
